We offer routine as well as sickness exams, oral exams, basic care consultations, and training of small mammals such as ferrets, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, and pigs.  We offer routine and sickness exams, oral exams, basic care consultations, training and behavior assessments.

Routine Exams:
These exams are very important in pocket pets, as they are prey species, they have adapted to hide their illness very well.  Routine exams assess your pet's overall health and includes checking the eyes, ears, skin, oral and dental health.  During the exam nutrition and caretaking will be discussed.

Sickness Exams:
When your pocket pet begins to show signs of illness it is very important to bring them in as soon as possible.  Your pet may need antibiotics, fluids or other treatment.  In some cases we refer pocket pets to the University of Illinois for further diagnostic treatment and care.

Basic Care Consultations:
The most common health issues associated with small mammals is related to their basic care.  Our doctors can give you the most current information on health, housing, nutrition, enrichment, and grooming for your pet.

Training and Behavior Assessments:
Did you know that your small mammal can be trained to do anything a dog can do?  Training your pet helps to improve your pet's mental health, provides enrichment, improves the relationship and trust of the pet with the handler, and facilitates medical care.  
Occasionally some pets have behavioral issues that need to be addressed and we can help you, help your pet.

Radiographs:
We can use radiographs or X-rays to assess broken bones, respiratory disease, foreign body ingestion, and other health related issues.

Dental Procedures: 
A common health issue which affects pocket pets is dental disease.  Rodents have open - rooted teeth which means they continuously grow throughout their lives. Proper diet and toys help to maintain normal architecture of their teeth; however, your pet's teeth may become overgrown which affects their eating and bite alignment.  A dental treatment will help align their teeth and make eating more comfortable.
